Expired Drugs Fake Drugs Galore !!!!

Our Tamil Nadu Government deserves our whole hearted appreciation for the way in which they rushed to arrest the distribution of expired and fake drugs in the market. Day-in and day-out, news is pouring on the steps taken by Drug controlling Authority of the State which is equally encouraging.

The present Act is exhaustive and complete. What is required only is total and dedicated adherence to the provisions of the Act and effective monitoring by officials appointed for the purpose. The Government has also said more drug inspectors are now being appointed and employed for this purpose.

Issues related are: ( and these are not unknown to the authorities.)

1. Almost all drugs (including the ones to be sold on the prescription by a medical examiner only) are sold over the counter.
2. No receipt (detailing the batch and expiry of drugs sold) is issued to the buyer, unless insisted upon by a majority of retailers.
3. Retailers buy drugs from sub stockists to replenish stocks or to get the products very urgently.
4. The marketing adopt apparently unethical means to boost their sales in the market. ( The Medical Council recently issued again orders prohibiting perks, concessions to medical professions for preferring a particular brand over others.)
5. A complete and comprehensive list of manufacturing companies located in various states is not available. Recently I perused the quarterly journal of IDB which lists all such companies, only to find out that the list is not exhaustive.
6. The rate of Commissions/discount by the Manufacturers to distributors, from distributors to the Stockists, by the Stockists to sub stockists, from sub stockists to retailers are not known. It appears to be a cut throat competition at all levels.
7. Last but not the least, there is no exhaustive information available to the Public at large as to what are the drugs that are banned from time to time.

THE HINDU, in an article, when the news broke out, enlisted the route through which drugs are supplied to the retailer for sale. There is no mechanism to check from whom the retailers buy the drugs, and at what rate.
The retailers must be advised to keep an inventory of the drugs they buy, from whom they buy, and at what price they buy.

It is our appeal to the Authorities to ensure that total vigilance in this field is ensured on a sustained basis.

Doctors must be advised to prescribe only such drugs of companies well established and whose credibility is beyond doubt.

Retailers must be advised to buy drugs only from trusted distributors and stockists. And these distributors/stockists should obtain necessary license from the Government.

It is highly desirable that the Government prepares such a comprehensive list of authorised distributors and/or stockists of drugs and furnish the same to retailers. Retailers are to be advised to follow the practice of buying the drugs only from such Govt.approved and licensed stockists/distributors that the Govt.authorites have approved.

Periodical random checks would go a long way in arresting the unhappy trend that has surfaced recently. There should also reasonable checks on how doctors use their free samples, given by the marketing salesmen from various manufacturing companies.

While commending and appreciating the Tamil Nadu Government for all their work in their direction, we eagerly expect that the Government sustains their vigilance though it may cost them a lot for welfare of public.

For the public, we have a few advices:
THIS LIST IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE, BUT ONLY A MINIMUM OF CARE TO BE TAKEN BY ALL.

ALWAYS LOOK FOR DATE OF EXPIRY OF ANY DRUG (INCLUDING VITAMINS) WHENEVER YOU BUY.  PLEASE LOOK AT THE SPELLING OF THE DRUG IN THE STRIP (OR PAD) OF THE DRUG AND ENSURE THAT IT MATCHES WITH THE SPELLING WRITTEN BY THE DOCTOR.

DO NOT BUY ANY DRUG OR MEDICINE WHICH IS NOT PRESCRIBED YOUR PHYSICIAN. PLEASE, FOR HEAVENS' SAKE,  DO NOT CONSULT ANY SALESMAN AT THE RETAIL SHOP EVEN FOR ANY MINOR AILMENT.    NEVER TAKE ANY ANTI-BIOTIC OR PAINKILLER OR STEROID WITHOUT  A PRESCRIPTION FROM YOUR DOCTOR, PARTICULARLY WHEN YOU ARE HAVING AN STOMACH ULCER, OR ALLERGY, HYPERTENSION, DIABETES.

NEVER BUY ANY DRUG WITHOUT CONSULTING AND GETTING A PRESCRIPTION FROM YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU ARE PREGNANT, OR BREAST FEEDING YOUR BABY.   BE AWARE THAT EVEN THOSE  MEDICINES PRESCRIBED BY YOUR DOCTOR  DURING YOUR NORMALCY MAY HARM YOU WHEN YOU ARE PREGNANT OR BREAST FEEDING.

DO NOT BUY ANY DRUG WHICH THE RETAILER SALESMAN SAYS THAT IT IS THE SAME AS WHAT YOUR DOCTOR HAS PRESCRIBED BUT BY A DIFFERENT COMPANY. ALWAYS CHECK UP WITH YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY.

DO NOT BUY ANY COMBINATION OF ANY DRUG, EVEN WHEN IT INCLUDES A DRUG PRESCRIBED BY YOUR DOCTOR, UNLESS YOUR DOCTOR AUTHORIZES IT.

DO NOT GIVE ANY TABLET OR CAPSULE TO ANYONE, JUST BECAUSE THE SAME TABLET OR CAPSULE DID TREAT YOU WELL AND PRESCRIBED BY YOUR DOCTOR.

DO NOT TAKE ANY VITAMINS UNLESS YOU NEED THEM AND YOUR PHYSICIAN ADVISES YOU.IN CASE YOU FEEL U NEED SOME SUPPLEMENT TO YOUR DIET, CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR AND HAVE A CHECK UP .

Please check up your almirah periodically for unused drugs and destroy them immediately. Do not just throw them in the dustbin in a bunch.

Physicians Believe That Living To 100 Years Old Is Not Difficult

Yes, you read that title correctly! Doctors today believe it is not hard for a person to live up to one hundred years of age or more. That sounds perfectly splendid but what about the quality of that life at one hundred years. These physicians say it is achievable to live this long and at the same time under constant threat of age related illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease etc. They say it is all a result of modern medicine and a new philosophy amongst healthcare professionals. These modern physicians are concentrating on the aggressive treatment of the geriatric set and their health issues. This is instead of having an attitude of an ageist and assuming they would not benefit from a particular treatment.

All that being nice and everything, I still would like certain guarantees before I risk a prolonged life full of complicated health troubles and mega doses of prescription medicine where a computer is required to keep track of my meds. Living a short life with abundant health difficulties would be more acceptable to most people than living a longer life with those same troubling health problems. I would personally be at the front of the line if they knew for sure my life would be extended along with my health and vivacity

Why Would Anyone Want To Settle For Less?

When that day arrives when humankind thinks we are able to have the cake and eat it too, will likely be the day when we will all be living lengthy lives, reaching one hundred fifty to two hundred years old. Of course, there is no accounting for wars, plagues or major trauma as we progress in age. Imagine watching people participate in activities such as waterskiing and tennis at the age of ninety! The common thought would be this is an image that is quite improbable. That would be because humans have never known it to be any other way.

It is difficult to change this kind of societal preconditioned thinking. Our collective vision of an eighty or ninety year old is someone nodding off in a comfy chair inside a nursing home. These folks are presumably well cared for in these places and that is the comfortable status quo, why change it. One would hope they are also living comfortably at that age and are not in any distress. Even the centenarians among them are certainly not playing tennis! Ask any of them if they want to live another twenty years and they would likely tell you only if health comes with it.

Perceptions Need To Be Adjusted

These days old age does not equate automatically with ill health, not with HGH in the picture. The human growth hormone has cleared some new pathways with regards to human aging and health that were previously nonexistent. The elderly do not have to be sequestered in their closed little worlds any longer, keeping away from all of life’s stressors. Being monitored twenty four/ seven for the first sign of failing, so they have some hope of reaching age one hundred will soon be a thing of the past. It may be possible to do all those things you did when you were thirty or forty, at the age of one hundred due to HGH and its enormous potential. There are also other anti aging therapies that hold great promise and make achieving the century mark in great shape possible.

It will not be long until the current retirement age will need to undergo a revision, maybe in twenty or so years. This benchmark age will be moved forward not backwards. There are already signs of people working longer either out of necessity or out of boredom. Either way they need optimal health to do it so this clearly shows which way the momentum is focused. Many people reaching their senior years are already taking anti aging supplements of some type and some of those are using HGH in particular.

One can only imagine what a retirement age of one hundred would be like rather than the current fifty five or sixty five years. This is not as silly as it sounds at first. Not when you understand that people are beginning to live longer life spans with greater life quality attached than those before them did. You can be certain that HGH along with other new anti aging formulas will play a large role in this forthcoming centenarian insurrection.

The baby boomer generation will be leading this charge into the future. The generation “that had it all” will want even more and that includes having the good health, money and most important – the added time to enjoy it all with.

SOY THE NEW CHOLESTEROL DIET

The New Low-Cholesterol Diet: Soy
Versatile soy protein may lower bad fats floating in your bloodstream.

Cholesterol-soy-protein

Soy protein can be a meal, a side dish, a snack, or a drink. Made
from the soybean, it's a staple of Asian diets. Yet it's largely been
the butt of jokes about hippies and vegans -- until recently. Today,
the buzz about soy is serious. Can it lower cholesterol naturally?

Some studies say yes. But, unfortunately, research shows mixed
results. We may not know the answer for years.

How Might Soy Protein Help?

A number of studies over the past decade seemed to show soy
protein could lower "bad" LDL cholesterol and triglycerides without
lowering "good" HDL cholesterol. Researchers aren't exactly sure how
soy protein might help. It could be a combination of the effect of the
protein and natural chemicals in soy called isoflavones. But in January
2006, the American Heart Association announced some surprising
news. A review of 22 clinical studies concluded that eating soy-based
foods has only minimal impact on cholesterol and other heart-disease
risk factors.

Until further research clears up the controversy, should you dump soy
from your diet? Not at all, says Tufts University nutrition researcher
Alice Lichtenstein, DSc, who helped write the AHA statement. "Soy
is a great food. It is low in saturated fat and it is a good-quality
protein," she says -- even if its heart benefits are less than
expected.

Conflicting Evidence on Soy

There have been many studies of the effects of soy on cholesterol.
One major article published in TheNew England Journal of Medicine
found that replacing animal protein with soy protein could lower levels
of total cholesterol, bad LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. At the
same time, it didn't significantly lower levels of "good" HDL
cholesterol.

Some studies have shown that soy protein, when eaten along with
other cholesterol-lowering foods, can have a big effect. In a study
published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2005,
researchers tested cholesterol-lowering drugs against cholesterol-
lowering foods in a group of 34 adults with high cholesterol. People
ate 50 grams of soy protein daily along with other cholesterol-
lowering foods. The results were striking: the diet lowered cholesterol
levels about as well as cholesterol drugs.

However, not all studies agree. An analysis of various studies led by
the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality found that soy
had a modest effect on cholesterol levels. Researchers found that
eating a high amount of soy -- equal to about a pound of tofu a day
-- only added up to a 3% reduction in "bad" cholesterol levels.
Based on those more recent studies, the AHA Nutrition Committee no
longer recommends eating soy specifically to lower cholesterol.
However, the AHA does consider soy burgers and other soy foods a
healthy replacement for high-fat meats
There are almost endless ways of getting soy into your meal plan.
Here's a rundown of some of your options.
* Tofu is a solid extract of soybeans. "It has a mild, bean-like
flavor," says Ruth Frechman, RD, a spokeswoman for the American
Dietetic Association (ADA.) "It can be added to anything you cook or
It can be eaten right out of the package." Tofu is often used in stir
-fries, curries, or stews. It tends to pick up the flavor of the sauce
it's in.
* Soy nuts are roasted soybeans, which can make a tasty snack.
"Soy nuts are a convenient, crunchy source of protein," Frechman
tells WebMD.
* Soymilk is made from ground soybeans mixed with water. You
can substitute soymilk for milk in your coffee or your cereal. Or you
can just drink it on its own. "A lot of my clients really like smoothies
made with soy milk," says ADA spokeswoman Suzanne Farrell, MS,

RD. "That's a great way to get soy into your diet."
* Soy burgers, soy cheese, and other products now fill the
freezers and refrigerators at your local supermarket. Manufacturers
have come up with soy products that mimic just about every kind of
meat and dairy product. Buy a few different types and give them a
try.

* Edamame are soybeans still in the pod. They're sold either
frozen or fresh. Frechman recommends microwaving frozen edamame
in a little water and chicken bouillon for an easy way to get soy
protein.

* Tempeh is a fermented soybean cake. It can be used as a meat
substitute, and works well in spaghetti sauce.

* Miso is a paste made from soybeans that is used for soup
stocks or as a seasoning.

* Soy flour is a powder made from ground, roasted soybeans. It
can be added to baked goods.

Choose the foods that you like. The key is to substitute soy for
high-fat meats, such as hamburger.
